Whales were once land animals and looked like giant wolves with hooves, but now they live only in the ocean. They still need to come up to breathe, but their noses have changed into a small blowhole or nostrils on top of their heads. Their size and weight vary greatly — whales can weigh anywhere from just over 20 kilos to 190 tons. There are 23 known species of whales around Iceland, including 7 baleen whales and 11 toothed whales.
